Whys and Wherefores
These pages (specifically the author bibliographies) where created
starting in 1995 to collect bibliographical information on authors working
in the Speculative Fiction genre (a lazy way of saying anything that fits
my rather broad definition of SF). As soon as I began putting
them online and at the same time exploring the net I realized almost
exactly what I wanted them to be. More than just a set of bibliographies
(even then there where sites which filled that niche to a lesser or
greater extent) but a resource that made proper use of the hypertext
format by supplying not just the bio and bibliographies on my site but
links to as many relevant offsite resources as possible. Most similar
sites seemed to still be stuck using the web as another form of print:
constrained to static text.
Despite the almost immediate realization that the site could never
be all that it could be, since I work on it alone and am far too
obsessive and controlling to allow anyone else to mess with it, I found
that I enjoy working on it and use it often enough myself to justify it's
existence. I also enjoy the notes I receive from people who have found it
useful. I don't forsee giving it up anytime soon so even if you see
longish periods without major updates I am probably still hacking away at
the nooks and crannies making minor bibliographical updates or clearing
away the dead links.
