Collaborated with Stanley Kubrick on
2001: A
Space Odyssey,
writting the novel at the same time as
Kubrick
wrote the
screenplay,
giving each other feeback and revisions. In wasn't clear until the end
wether the movie or the book would come out first (the movie did)
Clarke had a small cmaeo in the sequel 2010: Odyssey Two
Born in Minehead, England. Became interested in science
and gadget-building as a young boy. When he was fourteen
he began reading SF magazines such as Amazing and
Astounding and at fifteen began writing for his
school magazine, eventually becoming it's assistand editor.
At nineteen he moved to London where he meet other SF writers and
became treasurer for the british Interplanetary Society. He wrote for and edited fan
magazines, eventually selling articles to Tales of Wonder in 1938.
During World War II he served in the RAF and during this period he
came up with the idea for artificial satellite, publishing an
article called "Extraterestial Relays" in 1945 in Wireless World.
Also during this period he began selling to the American market.
He graduated with a B.Sc. in physics and maths from King's
College, London. He was Assistand Editor for Physics Abstracts
until his writting began to bring in more income than his salary at which
point he took up writting full-time.
Took up skin-diving in the mid 1950's and continues enjoying it
still. Became paralysed after contracting polio and hitting his head and
spent the next three years recovering from that.
Resident of Sri Lanka since 1956. Awarded a knighthood "for
services to literature".
His novel Rendezvous with Rama is currently being adapted into
a film starring Morgan Freeman
and directed by David Fincher.
