Bio:
Recipient of the 1975 Lifetime Achievement Award of the
World Fantasy Convention. Hugo award winner (1958 sh.st.). Born in
Yonkers, NY. Educated at NYU, Yeshiva U and Pierce College. Spent a
year in the Israeli Amy during the Arab-Israeli War of 1948-49.
Married for time to Graia Davis, with whom he wrote in
collaboration with. Editor of F&SF (1962-64), part of the time from
Mexico. His first sale was to Orthodox Jewish Life Magazine eight
years before he broke into the genre. He also wrote mystery stories, two
as Ellery Queen and a hard to find collection of essays called
Crimes and Chaos. Won the Edgar, Ellery Queen, Hugo
awards, the later for his stint as editor of F&SF from 1962-64.
Primarily recognized for his
short fiction he also wrote some memorable novels. Although mainly a SF
writer early on, he tended towards fantasy in later years, he also
kept an irregular correspondence with a large number of people.
Davidson died suddenly of a heart attack near his home in
Bermerton, WA. the morning of May 9th while hospitalized for other
health problems, he was 70.
