Caguas (pop. 173,961) is the largest inland town on the island. It has the Antigua Alcald’a de Caguas (dating from 1856) on C. Mu–oz Rivera and the Catedral Dulce Nombre de Jesśs de Caguas (1928) on C. Conchado; both are in front of Plaza Palmer. In the same area, the Plaza de Recreo (1950) is one of the best examples of Art Deco found in Puerto Rico. Doubling as the Museo Hist—rico de Caguas, the Antigua Carnicer’a de Caguas (tel. 746-0669; open from Mon. to Fri., 8:30-noon, 1-3:30) dates from 1871 and is one of the best examples of this type of building found on the islands. An attractive private residence is the La Casita Verde on C. Monse–or Berr’os at C. Acosta.
