I once lived across from this volcano which is set across the bay from the city of Kagoshima in southern Kyushu. To get to the spot where this phot was taken, I had to take a ferry and then walk. It woke me up in the middle of the night once, and black volcanic sand would rain down on the city on occasion. Despite their side effects, I love volcanoes.
