Have you ever lived next door to a Burger King?

Well, I have.

It smells!

And there are other consequences....

If you are reading this, you may have passed by on foot or on the Muni and seen my signs in the window.

I don't like having signs in my window.

But then I don't like smelling grease each time I open it...

If you want to read about what happened to me, read The Burger King and I, an article which has been published in the November 1997 issue of San Francisco Frontlines in a slightly abbreviated form.

I also wrote a second article: The Burger King and I, Part II

Here's a good article about fast food and children's health.

Update: The situation remains the same: Smokestack next to my kitchen window (dirty filters!), open oil bins and greasy floors in the fire exit we share, illegal office use in the back, open doors... The one improvement is that, having been cited by the City Health Department numerous times, Edward Szeto has installed a small wastebasket in front of his perpetually-open stench-exuding doors. Graffiti is all over the building, and wrappers litter the street. Owner Szeto's patron Julie Lee is under criminal indictment.

When I see him, the reaction is the same: "Go fuck yourself."

The Inner Sunset Burger King was on the front page of the San Francisco Chronicle in December 2003.

Burger King building owner Julie Lee returns to court.

Be sure to let your elected representatives know just how you feel about the changes in our neighborhoods. Together we can make a difference!

"We are no less guilty of favoring convenience. Each time we eat an inexpensive fast-food hamburger, we contribute in a small way to the clearing of tropical forest, because much of the cheap beef imported for these burgers comes from Central and South America." — Adrian Forsyth in Tropical Nature

Such a pleasant soul!

I had to file a police report in September 2000 after he assaulted me on the street.

I hope that Mr. Szeto will someday accept mediation as former District Attorney Terrence Hallinan had asked. We live in a civilized society, and there is no reason for your vendetta against me. I have never asked for anything other than for this business to minimize the impact of your presence on all of us in the neighborhood! We were deprived of a voice beforehand, so he should respect our feelings now!

In its "Best of the Bay 2005," the San Francisco Bay Guardian said under the heading "Best Silent Activism": The ‘Boycott Stinky Burger King’ signs appeared in the streetside windows as soon as the King came to Ninth Avenue: a plea for conscious consumerism, and a rallying cry to support nonchain neighborhood merchants. The information changes, but the point has remained the same — the signs have been rotating for years and years now, so to whoever lives upstairs and to the left of the burger purveyor, thanks for sharing your neighborhood view with us.

Update: Szeto's failed Burger King on Divisadero Street has become an art salon. Excerpt: "Local photographer Leila Fakouri bought the dilapidated but beautiful Victorian on the corner of Fell and Divisadero Streets and transformed it into an art gallery, lounge, bar, live music venue – and home away from home. And just think: it could have been a Burger King."
